Peaceful Protests
Where can I park?
Please park in public parking lots. Avoid parking in front of the businesses in the downtown area. Click here for the map, or scroll to the bottom of the page.
Will your office be open?
Yes! When we are hosting a protest our office will be open before our scheduled start time to sign-in, make signs, socialize, and for anything else you may need. We usually have someone staff the office during the protest as well.
What can I expect?
Marquette County Dems hold peaceful, respectful protests. While we cannot predict everything, we can ensure our protocols are followed.
What are the protocols?
We provide this protestor pledge to all participants.
As a peaceful protestor in Montello, I will…
Stay calm, focused & civil. Our goal is to display our beliefs - not provoke.
Not engage with agitators. Do not respond. Step away. De-escalate.
Stay on the sidewalk. We are not permitted to protest from the park and must stay on the sidewalk while holding signs. We cannot be on the grass in the park holding signs. Allow pedestrians to pass and make way for anyone walking past. Please step back and allow them to pass safely. Again, please do not engage in negativity.
Respect other protestors’ space and safety.
Not interfere with traffic. Please obey traffic signals and cross at the crosswalks. Please stay out of the road and do not wave flags or signs into traffic.
Know my rights & obey lawful orders. Remember you have the right to remain silent & the right to record in public. Do not resist - calmly acknowledge and obey lawful orders.
What are my rights?
Your First Amendment rights under the U.S. Constitution safeguard fundamental freedoms. We are wholly within our rights to exercise our free speech, freedom to assemble and to petition our government.
The Five Core Freedoms of the First Amendment

Religion: Practice any religion, or no religion at all. The government cannot establish an official state religion or interfere with your worship.
Press: Journalists and media can investigate and report on government actions without censorship.
Assembly: Gather peacefully in public to protest, advocate for change, or hold meetings.
Petition: Demand changes or voice grievances to the government through lawsuits, protests, or by contacting elected officials.
